Om tryambakam yajamaheSugandhim pushti-vardhanam |Urvarukamiva bandhanatMrityor mukshiya mamritat ||
Meaning: We worship the three-eyed One (Lord Shiva), Who is fragrant and nourishes all beings. May He liberate us from death for the sake of immortality, Just as the ripe cucumber is severed from the bondage of its vine.
भावार्थ
हम त्र्यम्बक (तीन नेत्रों वाले शिव) का यजन करते हैं, जो सुगंधयुक्त हैं और सब जीवों का पोषण करते हैं। जैसे पका हुआ ककड़ी का फल अपनी बेल से सहज ही छूट जाता है, वैसे ही हम मृत्यु के बंधन से छूटें — किंतु अमृतत्व से नहीं। यही इस मंत्र की सबसे सुंदर बात है: प्रार्थना मृत्यु टालने की नहीं, बल्कि मृत्यु के भय और जकड़न से मुक्त होने की है। फल पकने पर स्वयं गिरता है — बलपूर्वक तोड़ा नहीं जाता। ऋग्वेद ७.५९.१२।
