कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारंसंसारसारम् भुजगेन्द्रहारम् ।सदावसन्तं हृदयारविन्देभवं भवानीसहितं नमामि ॥

Karpuragauram karunavataramSamsarasaram bhujagendraharam |Sadavasantam hridayaravindeBhavam bhavanisahitam namami ||

Meaning: I bow to Lord Shiva, who is white like camphor, The incarnation of compassion, the essence of the world, Who wears the king of serpents as a garland, Who eternally resides in the lotus of my heart, along with Goddess Parvati.

भावार्थ

कापरासारखा शुभ्र, करुणेचा अवतार, संसाराचे सार, सर्पांचा हार धारण करणारा — असा तो भव (शिव) भवानीसह माझ्या हृदयकमळात सदैव वसतो; त्याला मी नमस्कार करतो. आरतीच्या शेवटी कापूर जाळला जातो — कापूर जळून मागे काहीच उरत नाही, तसाच अहंकार जळून जावा हा या श्लोकामागचा भाव. म्हणूनच हा श्लोक नेमका कर्पूरारतीच्या क्षणी म्हटला जातो.

मन्दारमालं कुलितलिकाय|कपालमाला शिवशंकराय |दिव्यंबरय च दिगम्बराय |नमः शिवायै च नमः शिवाय |

Mandaramalam kulitalikaya |Kapalamala kshitashekhary |Divyambaraya cha digambaraya |Namah shivayai cha namah shivaya |

Meaning: Wearing a garland of mandara flowers and matted locks, Adorned with a garland of skulls and the earth as crown, Clad in divine garments and also unclad (digambara), Salutations to Goddess Parvati and to Lord Shiva.

भावार्थ

मंदाराच्या माळा, कपालमाला, मस्तकावर चंद्रकोर; दिव्य वस्त्रे धारण करणाऱ्यालाही आणि दिगंबरालाही नमस्कार. शिवाची दोन्ही टोकाची रूपे — अलंकृत आणि नग्न — एकाच नमस्कारात सामावली आहेत.
