भावार्थ
पाच अक्षरे — न, म, शि, वा, य — म्हणून याला पंचाक्षरी मंत्र म्हणतात. ही पाच अक्षरे पंचमहाभूतांशी जोडली जातात: न = पृथ्वी, म = जल, शि = अग्नी, वा = वायू, य = आकाश. म्हणजे या मंत्राचा जप करताना संपूर्ण सृष्टीच शिवाला अर्पण होते. "ॐ" जोडून तो षडाक्षरी होतो. अर्थ साधा आहे — शिवाला नमस्कार असो. मागणी काहीच नाही, केवळ नमस्कार; आणि म्हणूनच तो सर्वात मोठा मानला जातो.
